Pursuing Intentional Living: The Magic Ticket Every Hard Working Black Woman Needs to Live Well

In a world that often demands so much from Black women — and in the wrong spaces may offer very little in return — intentional living can be the game-changer you didn’t know you needed. But let’s get one thing straight: Intentional living is not about deprivation or rigid minimalism. It’s not about adopting one type of home or creating a very specific looking space. It’s about designing a life that aligns with your values, goals, and unique vision of joy. For Black women, this means reclaiming our time, energy, and mental space so that we can focus on truly living well.

If that sounds appealing to you, here is how I would encourage you to embrace intentional living in a way that’s fabulous, purposeful, and unapologetically yours.

Intentional Living Can (and Should) Be Fabulous

Intentional living doesn’t mean your life needs to be sparse or boring. It’s about conscious consumerism — choosing things that enhance your life, spark joy, and support your goals. And then building a life that is ideal for your mental and physical well being, creativity, and goal attainment.

First, let’s narrow in on our things, though, because how they take up space in our immediate environment can have a significant impact on everything else.

Steps to achieve fabulous, intentional living:

  1. Define what “fabulous” means to you: An intentional life is a customized and personal one. Take time to reflect on your personal style, values, and what makes you feel good. Fabulous might mean a perfectly curated wardrobe, a cozy and inspiring home, or regular spa days. Each of us is different, and what we find fabulous today may change next year or even next month.
  2. Invest in quality, not quantity: Instead of buying lots of trendy items, focus on fewer, stylish, high-quality pieces that ideally serve multiple purposes. Whether it’s a timeless blazer or an elegant piece of décor, thoughtful purchases will serve you better over time.
  3. Embrace conscious consumerism:
    • Shop with purpose. Before buying anything, ask: Does this align with my current and future needs?
    • Prioritize ethical brands or Black-owned businesses to support your community while curating your life.
  4. Ignore external voices: Too often society tells Black women to downplay their desires or prioritize others. Silence those voices. Throw them out! Building a fabulous life that serves your well-being is not selfish; it’s necessary. You aren’t just working and following the rules and living right to serve everyone else, and that’s on that.

Key takeaway: Fabulous living is about actively designing a life that is rich in joy and purpose, and perfectly tailored to what makes you happy, fulfilled, and invigorated. It is not about acquiring things that create clutter. That does not serve you.

Creating Space for Peace, Ease, and Focus

The absence of physical and mental clutter creates the foundation for a stress-free, focused, and intentional life. There’s data, actual research to confirm that decluttering and curating your environment can actually be a huge enabler when it comes to one’s ability to thrive.

Steps to create peaceful and focused spaces:

  1. Start small: Begin with one area, like your closet, your workspace, or even a drawer. Keep items that serve a purpose or bring joy and let go of the rest. Be ruthless. Getting rid of things is not nearly as easy as it should be. It’s been hard as hell for me. But when you see that empty space it is so worth it.
  2. Do something every single day: I have made so much progress decluttering by just chipping away at the mess. I fill up a box or two and off to the thrift store I go. I put a few things in the giveaway pile, I reward myself with kombucha or something. I see wide open spaces in my house, I will literally twirl through them, knowing the energy is flowing because there’s no longer a dusty pile of shit sitting there to silently aggravate me.
  3. Adopt the one-in, one-out rule: For every new item you bring into your space, remove an old or unused one. This prevents clutter from creeping back in. You will not miss that stuff, friend. Trust me. And if you do have to replace it, it’s a wonderful chance to find exactly what you love and need as a replacement.
  4. Create functional zones:
    • Designate specific areas for work, relaxation, and creativity. This will enhance your focus and productivity. Structure is a good thing!
    • Add calming elements like plants or soft lighting to create an inviting atmosphere. Some people like scented candles or essential oil diffusers. Me? I just love to look at empty spaces.
  5. Be disciplined about your time: Decluttering is not just physical. Free up mental space by setting boundaries around your time. Say no to things that drain your energy or don’t align with your goals.

Key takeaway: A peaceful, uncluttered space provides the focus and ease you need to maximize everything you’re working so hard to achieve.

Thoughtfulness Over Spending: Building a Life That Works for You

Many Black women continually face societal pressures to overextend themselves — whether financially, emotionally, or physically. Intentional living challenges this narrative, prioritizing thoughtfulness over spending — and us over them.

Steps to build a thoughtful, functional life:

  1. Define your “needs” vs. “wants”: Identify what you truly need to live well and separate it from what marketing or societal pressures suggest that you should have.
  2. Make a vision board or journal: Write down your goals and the lifestyle you want to create. Use this as a guide for what to bring into your life — and what to release.
  3. Create a budget for intentional living: Allocate resources to things that truly matter, like health, education, or creating memorable experiences. Resist spending on items that don’t serve your goals.
  4. Be aware of manipulative narratives: Understand that many voices discouraging Black women from living intentionally often have hidden agendas. People who question your focus on self-care may be more concerned about what they can gain from you than your well-being.

Key takeaway: Thoughtfulness in consumption leads to a life that reflects your values, without the noise of societal expectations.

Why Being “Selfish” Is a Good Thing

Black women are often conditioned to put others first. Breaking this cycle isn’t selfish — it’s about moving beyond survival. Taking care of yourself enables you to show up fully for the people and things you love. That is how we thrive — not just survive!

Steps to embrace “selfishness”:

  1. Redefine selfishness: Recognize that prioritizing yourself is not selfish. It’s self-preservation. Reframe the term as investing in your well-being. These investments should happen consistently and continuously.
  2. Set boundaries: Say no to requests or obligations that don’t align with your goals or drain your energy. Protect your time and energy fiercely.
  3. Celebrate small wins: Treat yourself to something special when you achieve milestones, big or small. Acknowledge your hard work without guilt.
  4. Invest in personal growth: Spend time on activities that enrich your mind, body, and soul — whether it’s reading, therapy, or learning new skills.

Key takeaway: Putting yourself first is not selfish; it’s a revolutionary act of self-love and empowerment.

The Magic of Thoughtful Living

Intentional living isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating a life that serves your peace, joy, and purpose. When you’re thoughtful about what you bring into your life — whether it’s objects, people, or habits — you create the space you need to focus on what truly matters.

Final steps for intentional living:

  1. Curate your environment: Design a space that is appealing, comfortable and promotes peace and productivity while minimizing distractions.
  2. Prioritize what matters: Focus on building good health, wealth, nurturing creativity, and cultivating meaningful relationships.
  3. Practice gratitude: Regularly reflect on what you have and how far you’ve come. Gratitude fosters contentment and joy.
  4. Simplify your commitments: Free up time and energy for the things that truly matter by eliminating unnecessary obligations or stressors.

Key takeaway: Thoughtful living allows you to thrive, providing the clarity and focus needed to achieve your goals and live a life of ease and joy.

In summary

Intentional living is the magic ticket that every hard working Black woman deserves. It’s not just about decluttering or saving money — though those things are important — it’s about creating a life that reflects your values, promotes peace, and allows you to focus on what truly matters. By being thoughtful about what you consume, embracing your “selfish” side, and curating your environment, you’ll find the clarity and energy you need to build a life filled with health, wealth, creativity, and joy. The journey begins with one small, intentional step — but the rewards are endless.
